Vic Fangio

Q. What bothered you most watching film of that game, or watching the game? (Reuben Frank)

Vic Fangio: That I didn’t do a good enough job coaching. We didn’t play the run, obviously, well enough. When you do that, it kind of affects everything. I didn’t have them ready to do that the way we need to.

Q. The run defense, what do you think the issues there were? (Brooks Kubena)

Vic Fangio: It was everything. We just didn’t play it well.

Q. Was there any issue from your perspective with the effort? Did you see any of that? (John McMullen)

Vic Fangio: No.

Q. How do you judge that when you’re going off of tape? I mean, there’ll be commentary about ‘the effort wasn’t there.’ How do you actually judge whether somebody’s giving effort or not when you’re doing film review? (Tim McManus)

Vic Fangio: Man, you know what a guy’s capable of and what his good efforts look like and what they don’t. You can tell.

Q. Do you think the biggest problem was with the pass rush? (Johnny McGonigal)

Vic Fangio: Obviously, our EDGE position was affected through the injuries that we’ve had. Guys that were playing, namely [OLBs] Jonathan [Greenard] and Jalyx [Hunt] weren’t 100%. Those guys did a good job pass blocking.

Q. You did some simulated pressures and maybe a few blitzes early on and then kind of was just going with four it seemed at some point. Did you feel like maybe you should have tried more of the simulated stuff or do you feel like it wasn’t working so we just stick with the four? (Jeff McLane)

Vic Fangio: Yeah, kind of both. They had obviously fixed their problems from the previous games they had, were more than ready for it. We just went with the four-man rush, some of it, but we pressured a fair amount.

Q. How do you get more consistency out of DT Jalen Carter? (Zach Berman)

Vic Fangio: Well, he’s just got to get the mindset to where he’ll be consistent all the time.

Q. Is that the same with CB Riq Woolen on the outside when it comes to consistency? (John McMullen)

Vic Fangio: I think it’s a little different. The one penalty he had, we had no rush and the guy runs a deep end and then pivots back out, tough duty.

Q. What was your evaluation on the way OLB Jonathan Greenard played and do you envision a bigger workload for him this week? (Andrew DiCecco)

Vic Fangio: Hopefully, yes. I think late in the week last week he made some strides with his injury and hopefully we’ll see more of him this week.

Q. With CB Riq Woolen, this is a press man primarily, primary corner coming in. Has the transition to being more zone affected him? (Jeff McLane)

Vic Fangio: No. Our defense schematically is very similar to what Seattle plays, so he’s used to that.

Q. Going back to DT Jalen Carter, the mindset of being consistent, where would you say his mindset is right now and how does he get there to have that mindset that you would like to see out of him? (Olivia Reiner)

Vic Fangio: I think he sees the plays where he didn’t play good enough and he’s got enough pride to fix it.

Q. With DT Jordan Davis, they have a good interior offensive line. Is it just a matter of they had their A-game or is — (John McMullen)

Vic Fangio: Yeah, I think in all of it, you have to give them credit first and foremost. They did a good job blocking us and you’re right, they are good interiorly.

Q. Between the lack of sacks and the lack of takeaways, which one do you think — I guess which one is most fixable or most easily fixable? (Zach Berman)

Vic Fangio: Well, I mean, we’ve got to do a better job playing the run. When you let them run the ball, the takeaways aren’t going to show up as much. I think our pass rush will improve.

Q. You’ve been able to obviously have the latest boxes in the NFL for a long time, but when you need safety help there, do you have the safeties there? Is S Andrew Mukuba able to come down and fill those gaps if necessary? (Jeff McLane)

Vic Fangio: Yeah, he is. [DB] Kenny [Moore II] is too, surprisingly for his size, and [DB] Michael Carter when he was playing.

Q. One more about DT Jalen Carter. The way he played against the Jaguars, is he in a place where he can play like that every week? (Reuben Frank)

Vic Fangio: I believe so.

Q. And what would that take? (Reuben Frank)

Vic Fangio: You just need to have the right mindset.

Q. Snap percentages for LBs Jihaad Campbell and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. were about the same the last couple weeks. Do you foresee that changing, like Jeremiah maybe getting more or same? (Jimmy Kempski)

Vic Fangio: Yeah, part of it too was Jihaad came up a little bit lame during the game, and we’ll see how he’s feeling as this week progresses.

Q. What have you seen out of DB Cooper DeJean through seven weeks? What’s your evaluation? (Tim McManus)

Vic Fangio: Good. Cooper’s a good player. Trust him totally. Has he gotten beat some? Yeah, he has, but that’s going to happen to all those guys at some point. It’ll turn and he’ll get his.

Q. DB Cooper DeJean’s talked before about how tough it is to rebound from those snaps where he gets beat or when the defense doesn’t make plays that maybe they’ve made in the past. How do you try to manage him through some of that adversity that he’s facing this year? (EJ Smith)

Vic Fangio: I think he’s mature enough and confident enough that he could do that.

Q. Has the workload of learning multiple positions over the years been a strain on him? (Brooks Kubena)

Vic Fangio: No, last year he played corner and nickel. This year he’s playing safety in nickel, so it’s pretty equal.

Q. OLB Arnold Ebiketie has gotten a lot of snaps due to circumstances over the past two weeks. How do you think he’s handled it? (John McMullen)

Vic Fangio: Good. He’s progressed nicely and done a good job for us.

Q. One more on DB Cooper DeJean, he was a little banged up a few games. Is he still a little banged up or is he good? (Jimmy Kempski)

Vic Fangio: I’m not sure exactly. I’m not sure exactly where he is at in that regard. Everybody’s a little banged up at this point, but he’s well enough to play.

Q. What’s been the process like with Senior Defensive Assistant/Defensive Line/Associate Head Coach Clint Hurtt in terms of finding better positionings against the run? (Brooks Kubena)

Vic Fangio: Yeah. I mean, we just have to execute and play better with what we have.

Q. What kind of response have you seen from your guys so far this week? (Tim McManus)

Vic Fangio: Good. Today was the first day we saw them, obviously, other than the guys that came in yesterday that were hanging around. It’s been good.
