Vic Fangio

Q. What are your overall takeaways from that game against Washington? (Tim McManus)

Vic Fangio: Tough loss. We have to find a way to win those low scoring games. We’ve done it here in the past. We’ve got to be able to do it.

Q. What are your thoughts about the pass rush as a whole been over the past few weeks? (John McMullen)

Vic Fangio: It’s been there some and some it hasn’t been. Like all of us, it can get a little better, but I thought we had some decent ones the other day.

Q. What have you seen from OLB Jonathan Greenard as his snaps increase? (Ed Kracz)

Vic Fangio: What I see is a guy that has had very, very little practice. I mean, when I say very little. Minuscule. He’s missed all of training camp, missed the first two weeks of the season, no practice. Started practicing, was on a pitch count, [and] played 19 plays. It was going to increase the next week, got hurt early in that game, didn’t finish that game, didn’t play the next game. He’s been limited in practice. Contrary to some people’s popular belief, practice is important and he has had next to none.

Q. How do you make up for that? How does he get back to where he needs to be? (Reuben Frank)

Vic Fangio: Practice. There’s no pill, there’s no magic potion. You can watch all the tape you want. You can sit in meetings all you want. You can do walkthroughs all you want. Guy’s got to practice.

Q. Why in his status in the league, a veteran, why is practice still that important? (Jeff Neiburg)

Vic Fangio: Practice is important for everybody.

Q. Is there a specific way that’s affecting him? (Zach Berman)

Vic Fangio: Yeah, he’s just not into a groove. He’s not comfortable in our system totally and what we want him to do. It’s not because he doesn’t know or doesn’t want to, it’s just hadn’t executed it. Walkthroughs are an assignment check. It’s not an execution. I don’t know if I’ve had a guy that’s had so little practice.

Q. And it’s exclusively because of the injury? (Jeff McLane)

Vic Fangio: Exclusively.

Q. What did you make of LB Jeremiah Trotter Jr.’s performance in full game? (Brooks Kubena)

Vic Fangio: It was good. Some plays he’d like to have back, though he had some good plays, but good.

Q. What have you made of S Andrew Mukuba’s season so far? (Dave Zangaro)

Vic Fangio: Overall good. Again, some plays that he’d like to have back, but I think he’s a good young player that’s going to be a good player in this league for a long time.

Q. Do you expect to go back to rotating him and LB Jihaad Campbell once he comes back? (Brooks Kubena)

Vic Fangio: Yeah, we’ll see where Jihaad’s health is moving forward.

Q. You’re coaching a team that hasn’t had to deal with a lot of losing before. Do you feel like there’s any confidence wavering out? (Jeff Neiburg)

Vic: Fangio: Well, I’m sure there’s some wavering. I mean, what comes first? Confidence or winning? What’s the saying? What’s that saying? Chicken before the egg. Yeah.

Q. OLB Nolan Smith back after concussion, what did you think of his performance? (Jeff McLane)

Vic Fangio: I thought it was good overall. Again, he had a play or two that he’d like to have over, but overall good.

Q. One more on OLB Jonathan Greenard. Do you think he can get back to where he needs to be after the bye week in a few weeks? I mean, how close is he to being where he needs to be? (Reuben Frank)

Vic Fangio: Well, the bye week doesn’t mean anything other than for him, hopefully he gets healthier because most teams don’t even practice on by weeks anymore.

Q. The explosive plays, why are they coming up more frequently? (Zach Berman)

Vic Fangio: The two that we had the other day in particular, the passing plays, we were in pressures and got beat.

Q. What will the bye week look like for you as a DC [Defensive Coordinator]? More self-scouting maybe than previous years? (Ed Kracz)

Vic Fangio: No, [I] do it all the time. You got to self-scout yourself every week. If you wait for the bye week to find out things, you’re behind the eight-ball. In our case, it comes after eight or nine games. You can’t wait that long to self-scout. You got to self-scout yourself every week.

Q. How do you feel DT Jordan Davis has been as the run anchor up front? (Jeff McLane)

Vic Fangio: He’s been not quite as good as he had been in the past, these last couple weeks. [I] Think he’s got a little problem with his hand there, but he can be better, but we love Jordan and he’ll get there.

Q. Where do you feel like you are as a run defense after eight games? (Reuben Frank)

Vic Fangio: Inconsistent. Inconsistent. Thought it was okay to borderline good [on Sunday]. Then at the end of the game, we gave up the 33 yarder.

Q. What’s been the reason, do you think, for the inconsistency on that side? (Ed Kracz)

Vic Fangio: Yeah, I’ve got to do a better job coaching it and calling it. Obviously, we need to execute it.

Q. When you talk about that self-scouting process that you do consistently, is it typical for you? Has it been a little bit different this year? Has anything changed from that standpoint from your history? (John McMullen)

Vic Fangio: The process or what I’m seeing?

Q. What you’re seeing from what you expected to see, I guess. (John McMullen)

Vic Fangio: Yeah, we’ve just been inconsistent. We’ve been inconsistent.

Q. The disparity between first and second half production, what do you attribute that to? (Zach Berman)

Vic Fangio: Oh, could be a lot of things. I can’t put my finger on one thing.

Q. How do the Giants look different with QB J.J. McCarthy in there? (Zach Berman)

Vic Fangio: Good. They’ve got a really good offense. They’ve got skill at the receiving position. They did a nice job raiding the Ravens, not only for [New York Giants Head Coach] John [Harbaugh], but for [New York Giants TE Isaiah] Likely and [New York Giants FB Patrick] Ricard. They’ve got a lot of the Ravens type offense that they had when [New York Giants Senior Offensive Assistant] Greg [Roman] was there, and they’ve intermixed Kansas City type passing in there with [New York Giants Offensive Coordinator] Matt [Nagy]. They’ve got it going right now. They’ve got good wideouts, good tight ends, two good backs. The quarterback has come in, in a short period of time and really done a nice job, for them to get him for a sixth-round pick is a steal.

Q. What are the challenges of covering someone like New York Giants WR Malik Nabers? (Jeff McLane)

Vic Fangio: He’s tough. He’s fast, he’s quick, he’s athletic, good hands. I mean, he’s double tough.

Q. When you talked about being able to win the close, low scoring games, what comes to mind? What is necessary in order to pull that off? (Tim McManus)

Vic Fangio: We’ve got to get quicker stops, got to get a takeaway, get some big plays on defense, along [with] being solid along the way.

Q. Why do you think those big plays haven’t been there? (Dave Zangaro)

Vic Fangio: Oh, could be a lot of reasons. I don’t think there’s any one reason.

Q. We haven’t seen much of the depth corners this year. What do you think of that? (Zach Berman)

Vic Fangio: Depth corners?

Q. Yeah, the backup corners. (Zach Berman)

Vic Fangio: Yeah. Yeah. Well, [CB] Jonathan Jones was the primary backup and he played some. Right now, next in would be [CB] Kelee [Ringo].

Q. Trade rumors are always floating around this time of year, obviously. Do you talk to players about it or individually to players, anything like that? (Ed Kracz)

Vic Fangio: No. I mean, I would if I thought there was a rumor out there gaining steam that had no truth to it, but I don’t see that at this point in time.
