Vic Fangio
Q. What’d you see in the fourth quarter? (Reuben Frank)
Vic Fangio: The last two drives there, we just didn’t play well enough. The quarterback scrambling hurt us some. It wasn’t good the last couple for sure.
Q. DB Cooper DeJean mentioned that sometimes his eyes get bad and that’s what hurts him. Have you seen that before and how do you work on that with him? (Dave Zangaro)
Vic Fangio: I think it can happen at times and at times it’s helped him, too. He’s just got to make sure he can stay tight enough to his assignment and not let his vision get too skewed to where he gets out of position.
Q. DT Moro Ojomo making that play on the two-point conversion, what kind of goes into that? What did you see? (Martin Frank)
Vic Fangio: It was just a great play by him individually. Like he said, he saw the guard pull, so he immediately tried to cross the guy that was trying to block him, which he did successfully and made the play. Was a big play by him obviously, but to have the energy and the wherewithal to do that that late in the game was big.
Q. What did you think about the safeties’ first time paired together in a game, how they performed? (Jeff McLane)
Vic Fangio: They did fine. Obviously, there’s always a few plays here and there that could have been better, both either from an assignment or execution standpoint, but overall I think they did fine.
Q. What ultimately led to the decision to sit OLB Jonathan Greenard for the game and do you expect to have him back this week? (Jeff Neiberg)
Vic Fangio: Need to talk to [Vice President, Sports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer] Tom [Hunkele]. [Jokingly.] We need to get Tom up here to do one of these.
Q. What about the rotation on the EDGE? Why OLB Arnold Ebiketie getting more than OLB AJ Epenesa or is that just a matchup? (John McMullen)
Vic Fangio: No, AJ got a little dinged during the game, I think a little bit, which played a part in that.
Q. How did LB Jihaad Campbell do? (Tim McManus)
Vic Fangio: He did fine. Some plays he’d like to have back like most of us but thought he did fine.
Q. What part of LB Zack Baun’s performance did you most appreciate? (Zach Berman)
Vic Fangio: All of it. He played really good. I think it’s a reflection that he played all camp and practiced all camp. Last year, he missed most of camp with a back injury and when you practice, you play better.
Q. With DT Jalen Carter, you’ve talked in the past that he played a lot of reps. How did the conditioning part of it hold up from your perspective? (John McMullen)
Vic Fangio: It wasn’t terrible. We did have a lot of reps, but a good bit of them came the last drive of the first half and then those last two drives. Those other drives were kind of shorter in duration, so it’s a little easier to play that many.
Q. Did you get the pressure, especially from the EDGE guys, that you wanted to see? (Reuben Frank)
Vic Fangio: I thought our pass rush overall, when our guys that mainly rushed the passer, was inconsistent and really wasn’t good enough.
Q. Any theories why? (Reuben Frank)
Vic Fangio: There’s a lot of reasons here and there. Mobile quarterback plays into that. We just didn’t win enough of our one-on-ones across the board.
Q. You used DB Michael Carter in a little bit of a variety of ways. Does that help you break tendencies, the fact that he can just do different things at different spots? (Jeff McLane)
Vic Fangio: No.
Q. When you talk about DT Moro Ojomo’s play, it seems like he has great instincts. Is that something that just comes natural or is that something the players can work on? (Dave Zangaro)
Vic Fangio: Both. I think part of it is to his effort. His dogged effort plays a part in that, which he’s a little undersized as D tackles go and he needs to have all that stuff working for him. But he does have good instincts, but he gives great effort and he’s tenacious.
Q. What have you seen so far in Titans QB Cam Ward’s second season? (Brooks Kubena)
Vic Fangio: Well, it’s just the one game. The guy’s got very good arm talent. He’s athletic and mobile, like a lot of them are these days. I think he’s doing well and progressing well and he’ll just keep getting better and better in that offense.
Q. Looks like it’s going to be really hot on Sunday. We increasingly hear how these first three games are almost like an extension of the preseason because as you have noted before, very few starters play anymore. (Jeff McLane)
Vic Fangio: Yeah, except these games count.
Q. Yeah. So, how does that factor into how you game plan and call a game? (Jeff McLane)
Vic Fangio: It doesn’t.
Q. You tend to rotate guys up — (Reuben Frank)
Vic Fangio: Yeah, but that’s not calling a game. When you say calling a game, I don’t associate that with rotating guys.
Q. How does it change also the execution of the guys when they’re still kind of feeling things out and you’re still feeling them out? (Jeff McLane)
Vic Fangio: Well, they should be in shape. If they’re not, that’s an indictment on our training staff and strength staff.
Q. With DB Cooper DeJean’s performance, times where maybe it wasn’t as clean as you wanted it, did you attribute that to where his eyes were or was there something else that you saw in film review? (Tim McManus)
Vic Fangio: No. The one time that you’re probably alluding to, he had a tough route to cover in the defense we were in and the guy beat him. There’s nothing more than that. A little bit of that.
Q. He got dinged a little bit, too? (Jeff McLane)
Vic Fangio: He did.
Q. What stood out to you about CB Riq Woolen’s performance in his Eagles debut? (Olivia Reiner)
Vic Fangio: I thought he played well. I thought he had good focus, did a good job covering, very pleased.
Q. Can you lean on college tape at all or does that go away once he gets in the NFL? (Dave Zangaro)
Vic Fangio: Well, you can lean on it a little bit in what type of runner he is after the catch, his catch radius and stuff, but his tape here in the NFL, which is limited at this point, is more what you go on.
Q. How about S Andrew Mukuba, year two, especially from the communication aspect on the back end? How do you think he did? (John McMullen)
Vic Fangio: It was good. Not perfect, but it was good.
Q. What’s your takeaway after a game? You hold them under 300 yards, no takeaways, one sack. What’s your kind of overall takeaway when you leave a game like that? (Reuben Frank)
Vic Fangio: Disappointed in their three scoring drives. There’s some scoring drives you give up where the other team just beats you. They’ve got good players and good coaches, too. But I think we could have played a little better in some of those instances from our just overall play, so that was a little frustrating.
Q. With Titans Offensive Coordinator Brian Daboll, what are some of the challenges he presents as a play caller? (Andrew DiCecco)
Vic Fangio: Yeah, he does a good job calling the game, has a good run-pass mix. They’ll take their shots in the passing game, yet we’ll have some quicker throws also. I think he does a good job of mixing it up, not just run and pass, but the types of run and passes, too.
Q. Going back to DT Moro Ojomo, is that the type of play that his instincts and effort like you spoke about or are there tendencies or keys that they see before the snap if that type of shovel pass is coming? (Zach Berman)
Vic Fangio: No. They hadn’t shown that. Obviously, that was a special play they had cooked up for a two-point play and it was more of his reaction and instincts after the ball was snapped than anything pre-snap.
Q. Head Coach Nick Sirianni was on the radio this morning talking about Inside Linebackers Coach Bobby King’s help in the development of LB Zack Baun. What can you tell us about Bobby when it comes to developing guys? (John McMullen)
Vic Fangio: Bobby does a great job of being demanding of those guys with a heavy emphasis on playing physical, playing tough and playing assignment sound. I think overall he does a great job and has been heavily involved in Zack’s development, [former Eagles LB] Nakobe [Dean]’s development the last two years, and hopefully with Trot’s [LB Jeremiah Trotter Jr.], [LB] Smael [Mondon], and Jihaad’s development moving forward.
